Allen attended New York University in 1953, immediately breaking a course in motion picture production. He was discouraged and dropped out of school and started writing for television, including Sid Caesar's popular Your Show of Shows.

His work won an Emmy Award nomination. But he grew bored and soon tried his hand at stand-up comedy, become popular on the New York City comedy club circuit. He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Book of a Musical.
